The laboratory is organized by professor Vladimir Entov on the basis of the group of mechanics of complex liquids, part of Laboratory of ThermoGasDynamics, which head was professor Vadim Librovich. Originally the laboratory was called as Laboratory of applied continuous mechanics.

Now the Laboratory of mechanics of complex liquids carries out theoretical and experimental researches of the continuous media, which mechanical behaviour is not described by simple hydromechanical models. In particular, the laboratory studies movement of such liquids as oil, gas hydrates, foams, suspensions, solutions of polymer and surface-active substances, biological liquids, including blood and mucous systems. Objects of research are various kinds of liquid motion, including a flow in the porous media, in cracks, in channels; processes of breakup of films, filaments, drops; cavitation; wave phenomena.

Applications of research of laboratory include the improvement of methods of an intensification of oil and gas recovery, technologies of coating and inkjet printing, methods of medical diagnostics and treatment.

The laboratory co-operates with such international organizations as Universite de Marne la Valee (France), BP Institute for Multiphase Flow (University of Cambridge, UK), Istituto di Geoscienze e Georisorse - CNR (Pisa, Italy), Schlumberger Co, KMUTT (Bangkok, Thailand), California University in Santa Barbara (USA), University of Illinois at Chicago (USA).
