Tribology Laboratory

Laboratory Activity Areas

Researching basic issues of tribology:
 - model analysis of irregular surfaces contact interaction at various scale levels;
 - studying the influence of surfaces adhesive interaction on contact features and friction force;
 - development of lubricated contact theory;
 - model analysis of destruction of interacting objects surface layers under friction, fatigue-friction wear mechanism model development;
 - studying the influence of various coatings on interacting objects stress-strained state and kinetics of their wearing process.

Calculation of reliability and fatigue life of friction elements and couples:
 - methods of calculating various joints contact features and friction force in different contact pairs;
 - elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory;
 - solution methods development of contact wear problems;
 - predicting durability of deformed objects surface layers under friction interaction conditions.

Development of experimental methods allowing to define tribological features and structure of surface layers of interacting objects and to monitor their changing during frictional interaction:
 - friction and wear tests;
 - surfaces roughness analysis conducted by stylus method;
 - studying surfaces characteristics by micro- and nanoindentation methods;
 - analysis of structure, characteristics and chemistry of materials surface layers by optical and electron scanning and atomic force microscopy.

Laboratory History

The laboratory of tribology was established by two members of the Academy of Sciences, Ishlinsky A.Y. and Rebinder P.A., in 1972. Research areas selection was influenced by such outstanding scientists as Kragelsky I.V. and Galin L.A. The first laboratory head was Professor Mihin N.M (1972-1989), the second head was PhD Dobychin M.N. (1989-1996). Since 1996 the laboratory has been working under the supervision of Goryacheva I.G., member of the Academy of Sciences and Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. She started working at the laboratory as a juniour scientist in 1973. During this laboratory operation the staff has conducted theoretical and experimental researches in various tribology fields; they also have developed unique instruments and tribological testing methods.

International and Russian Scientific Contacts

The researches conducted at the laboratory are supported by grants from RFFR (Russian Fund for Fundamental Research), grants from the President for Promoting Leading Scientific Schools and Young Scientists and by RR (Russian Railways).

The Laboratory together with All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Railway Transport (ASRIRT) conducts regular researches on the issue of interaction between a railway wheel and a rail. This research has resulted into development of computer system (tribodynamic model) connecting railway carriage dynamics to wheels and rails contact characteristics and wear. Besides, there are also some researches on developing new materials for railway machinery elements.

Moreover, the laboratory also conducts shared researches with the Institute of Metal and Polymeric Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, some institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMS (A.A. Blagonravov Institute of Machine Science), IGP (A.M. Prokhorov Institute of General Physics), IME (A.A. Baikov Institute of Metallurgical Engineering), IOC (A. N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds), etc.) and with MISHLEN company (France).
